The 2023 South Dakota Legislative Session is underway. With the session in North Dakota kicking off last week, legislators will now be hard at work in both states for the next few months. Here in South Dakota, the legislative session always convenes at 12:00 noon on the second Tuesday in January, as provided in the constitution. The 98th legislative session opened yesterday in Pierre, beginning with Governor Kristi Noem’s State of the State address. Later today we will hear the State of the Judiciary, followed by the State of the Tribes tomorrow. South Dakota legislators have until the beginning of February to introduce bills. As of this morning, 109 bills and 4 Resolutions have been introduced in the House and Senate. With such a short window to file a bill, expect the volume of bills introduced to really pick up over the next two weeks. In North Dakota, the deadline for introduction of bills is January 18th in the House and January 23rd in the Senate. With a session taking place every other year in North Dakota, quite a few more bills have been introduced; as of this morning, 459 bills and 8 resolutions have been introduced in Bismarck.
