Government Affairs
First and foremost, the Dakota Credit Union Association is an advocacy organization. Advocacy helps shape the views of our lawmakers and opinion leaders as well as developing and implementing measurable steps toward moving members of Congress and our state and local leaders to support the credit union movement.
Our highest priority is to provide representation for credit unions at all levels (local and federal governing bodies) that will help strengthen and promote a favorable credit union environment throughout the Dakotas. The Dakota Credit Union Association is the backbone of the credit union movement in our two states’ political advocacy efforts.

The Dakota Credit Union Association represents the interests of North and South Dakota credit unions before national and state legislative and regulatory bodies. During each legislative session, our advocacy staff follows current and proposed legislation dealing with issues that impact credit unions and their members. Through effective government relations the association’s advocacy/legislative affairs team will passionately carry out any necessary efforts that promote and strengthen a favorable operating environment for our Dakota credit union members.
Political Advocacy
With the threat of taxation always looming, it is more important than ever to ensure our lawmakers understand the differences between not-for-profit credit unions and other types of financial institutions. Your association actively seeks to engage members and elected officials in grassroots advocacy by raising and distributing funds through two political action committees, DakCUPAC (formerly CUPAC) and America’s Credit Unions PAC (formerly CULAC). Thankfully, these funds have been helping to build a strong credit union political backbone for many years.
DakCUPAC is the state Political Action Committee (PAC) for Dakota Credit Union Association, registered with the Secretary of State in both North Dakota and South Dakota. America’s Credit Unions PAC is the federal Political Action Council for America's Credit Unions and is the national PAC that contributes to our federal candidates with heavy input from the Dakota Credit Union Association. Each are run by a board of trustees made up of credit union professionals and volunteers.
Donations to DakCUPAC/America's Credit Unions PAC are used to support credit union friendly candidates in their bids for state and federal office.

Regulatory Advocacy
The Dakota Credit Union Association works closely with both state and federal regulators to advocate on behalf of our Dakota credit unions. Providing information and opinions from the credit union perspective ensures that our voice is heard when those regulators create rules, regulations, and guidance that affect credit unions’ ability to serve their members. As part of this regulatory advocacy effort, DakCU submits comment letters each year to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and to the North Dakota Department of Financial Institutions.

We represent credit unions in legislative discussions, focusing on preserving a dynamic and independent credit union movement. Our team keeps North Dakota and South Dakota credit unions informed on legislative developments, actively lobbies for or against impactful bills, and provides training for effective advocacy with state and federal lawmakers. This strategic involvement empowers us to advocate for policies that strengthen our community and safeguard the interests of our members.

Advancing Communities is an America's Credit Unions/League initiative designed to reinforce our industry message of how credit unions are providing support to members and communities navigating difficult circumstances. The economic and social impact that credit unions have provided in the past, present, and going forward is immense. More importantly, it’s crucial for our policymakers, elected representatives, and consumers to consider the difference that credit unions make. This campaign is a powerful advocacy tool as we strategically promote credit unions' role in Advancing Communities to lawmakers in each individual state.
