I am very pleased to share that Brian Schools, President/CEO of Chartway FCU (Virigina Beach, VA), and the current Chair of America’s Credit Unions Transition Board of Directors, has accepted our invitation to address Dakota credit union leaders during the opening session of our Annual Summit, being held May 14 – 16. As you know, I am a member of the transition board and proud to serve in this capacity. Brian and our colleagues on the board have set expectations for accountability and transparency from the leadership of America’s Credit Unions, which includes a commitment to uphold the mission and vision in all that we do. We are focused on meeting the needs of our member credit unions first and foremost, so you can continue to be your members’ best financial partner. Great things are coming! Summit Registration is Open! I am also happy to share that registration is now open for the 2024 Summit! This year, we are heading south to the Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort just outside of Sioux Falls. We have made some adjustments to the agenda, based on your feedback, which asked for more networking and “down time” allowed throughout the day. Therefore, we have expanded the event to encompass three days, May 14 – 16. You do not want to miss the incredible lineup of speakers that we have engaged for you, with areas of expertise ranging from credit union economics, volunteer and board of directors training, to marketing and leadership development. We will also be offering a Crasher opportunity for those age 35 and under, a golf outing, our popular awards banquet, and of course, our annual business meeting. The early bird discount saves each person $70 and is good through April 12. Find all the finer details, lodging information, and registration here. Reaffiliation Reminder & DakCU Board Seats Opening Just a friendly reminder that March 5th is the deadline to submit your association dues in order to secure voting privileges at our 2024 Annual Meeting. We do have three DakCU board seats that will be opening this year: ND Division A (currently held by Melanie Stillwell); ND Division C (held by Veronica Holweger); and Multi-State At-Large (held by Sean Rinkenberger). A nominating committee has been formed; feel free to contact Jeff Schmidt (Voyage FCU); Jana Thune (Fargo VA FCU); or April Tompkins (Explorers CU) with nominations or any questions about the nominating process. CUWLA & Filene to Tackle Succession Planning for Smaller CUs – Please Complete Survey! The Credit Union Women's Leadership Alliance (CUWLA) and Filene’s Innovation Group is launching BOLD Vision, a collaborative partnership to address the challenges faced by smaller credit unions, specifically those related to CEO retirements, through Innovative succession planning. Bold Vision represents the collaborative effort of five CEOs who lead smaller credit unions; leaders that truly understand the evolving landscape of credit unions and the unique challenges smaller institutions face as their CEOs plan for retirement. Their mission is to develop solutions that tackle the problem of small credit union mergers due to a lack of succession planning. The collaboration with the Filene Innovation Group will leverage their expertise in research and innovation to gather insights from CEOs who lead smaller credit unions (assets of $300 million or less) to form strategies that safeguard the future of small credit unions and mitigate the trend of mergers. They are a conducting a survey on CEO succession planning and they need your help. You can complete the survey here or watch for a direct email from DakCU with the survey link this week. Please respond by Friday, February 23, 2024. The insights of CEOs like you are crucial in this study; by participating in the survey, you will be directly contributing to innovative solutions aimed at safeguarding the future of our smaller institutions. Thank you in advance for your cooperation! Negative Consequences of Big Box Bailout Last Friday, America’s Credit Unions brought attention to their new interchange research that shows how the Big Box Bailout would hurt the very people that sponsors of the bill claim it would benefit. A message was sent to Congress, stating the bill will leave Americans more vulnerable to predatory lenders, escalate annual fees on credit cards, reduce fraud protections, increase financial pressures on community institutions’ card programs, and negatively impact the economy while reducing merchants’ costs with no requirements to share the savings with consumers. While data doesn’t vote, and sometimes facts don’t matter, our fight against the big box stores is grounded in data and factual research. Simply put, the Durbin Amendment has given us more than a decade’s worth of data showing that government price caps on interchange fees do not work. Card issuers would see reduced revenue and increased fraud costs, and consumers would see more barriers to credit access, especially those who need it most to make ends meet. The latest research confirms what we know: this bill would severely disrupt a system that’s already working, all for a bigger piece of the pie for the biggest merchants. The latest messaging is pushing back against changes to the current interchange system, and more is planned leading up to the 2024 Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., March 3-7. Be sure to visit the Protect Interchange website for additional information and resources as we continue to fight this harmful legislation. AACUL Welcomes Austin DeBey as Director of Advocacy Finally, I am pleased to share that Austin DeBey has joined the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) in a newly developed position, Director of Advocacy. DeBey was the Vice President of Advocacy Operations and Legislative Affairs at the GoWest Credit Union Association before joining the AACUL team. He has a proven 19-year track record of providing strategic leadership, coordinating projects, and leveraging the collective strength of credit unions working for single-state and multi-state leagues. Austin has ties to the Dakotas; his father, Galen DeBey, was a former president of the North Dakota Credit Union League before his passing in 2002. As a student at Bismarck High School, Austin would often help at the League, cutting the grass and washing vehicles. AACUL also recently announced an evolved committee structure to support its recently updated mission, vision and strategic pillars. The new committee structure includes an advocacy committee supported by four strategy work groups. DeBey will work closely with these groups to protect and advance a vibrant credit union system. We expect our advocacy team, including John Alexander, Chesney Garnos, and myself, will be communicating regularly with him as well. Have a great week, DakCU President/CEO
