Burgum throws hat in the ring for presidency. He’s in! Governor Burgum will officially launch his presidential campaign tomorrow at an event in Fargo. However, a short video teeing up his announcement was released yesterday. The “small town farm boy” (as he calls himself in the video) grew up in tiny Arthur, ND, which is about 25 miles northwest of Fargo. He graduated from North Dakota State University and earned an MBA from Stanford. He then returned to his home state and built a successful global software company here in North Dakota. Burgum’s start-up company, Great Plains Software, was acquired by Microsoft for $1.1 billion in 2001. The Governor joins a growing list of individuals that will be seeking the Republican nomination in 2024. Even though the Governor isn’t as well known on the national scene as most of the announced candidates, he does have a personal fortune that could help boost his prospects and may lead to a spot on the national debate stage during the primary season early next year. Surprisingly, Burgum is not the first North Dakotan to throw his hat in the ring. Many consider Teddy Roosevelt as the first and only North Dakotan to run and ascend to the presidency. After all, he famously attributed the time he spent in the North Dakota Badlands as helping him make it to the White House. However, as we all know, Roosevelt was from New York and only spent a few years here. The title of the first North Dakotan to run for the high office belongs to William Lemke, a prominent political character in North Dakota politics for over 30 years in the early 1900s. Lemke is credited for establishing the Nonpartisan League (NPL), which eventually evolved into the North Dakota Democratic NPL, and he served in the U.S. House of Representatives for eight terms beginning in 1932. Lemke’s leadership in the early days of statehood led to the establishment of the only state owned bank in the country, Bank of North Dakota, and the only state owned mill which still operates today in Grand Forks. However, Lemke was not originally from the state, he was born and raised in Stearns county near St. Cloud, Minnesota. He was a Yale law school graduate who set up his law practice in Fargo in 1905. Lemke was recruited by several political fractions to run for the high office on the newly established Union Party ticket and ran against FDR during the height of the depression. He garnered only 2% support nationwide, and the party folded shortly after. So technically, when Governor Doug Burgum officially announces his presidential bid for the high office, he will be the first North Dakota born person to seek the nomination of a major party running for President. You can watch his announcement on YouTube here. Field of Membership Conversion and Expansion Learning Session. I am pleased to announce that DakCU will be hosting a virtual learning session with CUCollaborate to discuss Field of Membership conversion and expansion issues on Tuesday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. (CT). CUCollaborate consultants will be exploring the processes involved in converting from a state charter credit union to a federally chartered credit union. Additionally, they will discuss options for FCU expansion opportunities including special rules for low income designated credit unions. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. This is a FREE event exclusively for DakCU members but we do ask that you register in advance here. A link will be provided to you prior to the session. Crisis averted, for now… It’s a return to normal business in Washington, D.C this week after Congress passed a bill to deal with the debt ceiling last week and the president signed the bipartisan legislation over the weekend. There are still some concerns with the deal, as some say the bill’s fine print actually eliminates the debt ceiling until 2025, thus allowing the administration the potential to increase the debt limit more than the $4 Trillion limit that was proposed in the bill. Sort of like getting an increased credit limit on your credit card while getting deferred payments for two years. Interchange on High Alert! With the National Grocers Association coming to Capitol Hill later this week and the National Retail Federation coming in mid-July, reintroduction of the Credit Card Competition Act is likely coming soon. There are strong signs the bill could be introduced while the grocers are in town. The National Restaurant Association is also soliciting signatures on a support letter they plan to send to Congress upon bill introduction. So, in short, be on the lookout for ACTION ALERTS if this should happen. The CUNA-League System stands ready to respond, to get in front of Congress on this, and share the detrimental impact this would have on our members. Dakota Capitols targeted with awareness efforts during Financial Literacy Month. Last week, CUNA released a report from their CU awareness geofencing ads that were placed during Financial Literacy Month in April. Each state capitol area was geofenced for one week that month, with ads displayed on LinkedIn and browser display webpages, which redirected to the Advancing Community webpage. A specific audience received the ads in the areas surrounding state capitals, and included state policymakers, staff, and other advocacy professionals. Overall, the campaign garnered over 4.6 million impressions nationally and had a click-through rate of .46% - which was on par with other similar campaigns. However, I am extremely pleased to share that South Dakota ads returned the second highest number of impressions in the nation at nearly 130,000 with a CTR of .82%! North Dakota had much fewer impressions at less than 14,000 – which CUNA stated was due to a lower number of devices in the geofence area. However, the CTR in North Dakota reached 3.20%. Below are examples of the ads that were shown. Speaking of awareness efforts – be sure to keep your eyes open for even more stationary and electronic billboards that will soon be popping up in areas where credit unions have supported our own State-Wide Awareness Program (SWAP). We are also running ads on GSTV for the next three months – so next time you are at the pumps, keep your eyes on that GSTV screen. You can check out our new 2023 featured videos here:
Additionally, we are placing our own geofencing and geovideo ads, along with continued placements in both printed and digital newspaper ads across both states. If you have any questions or feedback about our SWAP efforts, don’t hesitate to contact Lindsey Hefta. Professionals Forum & Foundation Golf Scramble scheduled. Join our call on Thursday to learn about our CMN Hospital campaign. One final reminder, DakCU is holding a virtual meeting this Thursday, June 8th at 3:00 p.m. (CT) to discuss a bold new proposal to support a micro-preemie care unit at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, ND. We invite all North Dakota Credit Unions to join us to hear about this exciting venture that can help save lives and have a long-lasting impact in our state and community. (South Dakota credit unions are welcome to listen in if they are curious about the proposal.) The call will last about 30 minutes and you can join with this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83215952896. Please ask a member of your leadership team to attend if you cannot join. If we accept this challenge, we will have exclusive naming rights and recognition for an entire treatment area. This would be an incredible credit union awareness and public relations opportunity for all involved, not to mention helping to serve our state’s most vulnerable children closer to home. Our hope is that every North Dakota credit union will pledge to support this campaign. Mary Hagen retiring after 45 years. In closing, I want to send a shout out and say congratulations to Mary Hagen, CEO of Freedom Community CU as she is retiring after serving for 45 years. There will be an open house at the credit union (4505 47th Ave S, Fargo) from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13th. Congratulations Mary, thank you for all you have done, and best wishes for a long and happy retirement. Have a great week! DakCU President/CEO
