Water and Power Community Credit Union in California has notified the Leagues about a series of fraudulent checks that are in circulation; be on the lookout for these identifiable signs.
Water and Power Community Credit Union, Los Angeles, CA, has notified the Leagues it has become aware of a series of fraudulent checks bearing the institution’s name that are in circulation.

Fraudulent checks are identified by the following:
  • Checks have been for various amounts ranging from approximately $1,845.49 up to $4,775.49.
  • Checks are similar to the credit union’s cashier’s checks, but various elements are inaccurate; fraud checks have the words CASHIER’S CHECK slightly below the credit union’s address line; legitimate checks are directly adjacent to the address line.
  • The issue dates on the fraud checks range from 06/23/2021 to 07/06/2021.
  • All fraud checks with the 06/23/21 issue date came in for payment of $2,930.00; ones for 06/28/21 issue date was for $2,450.00; ones with 07/01/21 were for $1,845.49 and $1,980.35; and all have the payee name, in addition to underneath the payee it says: RE: “Wendy Li.”
  • Fraudulent items with an 07/06/21 issue date came in for payment in the amount of $4,775.49 with two signatures. The “RE: Wendy Li” are not on those and the credit union does not require two signatures for checks under $20,000.00.
  • The fraud checks have security feature writing at the top of the checks; the credit union’s legitimate checks do not, the security info is on the back on the check.
  • All legitimate checks are a fading blue color, with a bold blue border around the top and bottom of the check.

The credit union reports that a total of 30 fraudulent checks have been presented for payment.  To verify check authenticity, contact the credit union’s Member Contact Call Center at 800.300.9728 option-2.

Finally, be sure to share this information with your front-line workers so they can be on the lookout!
