Legislative Update with Jay Kruse

8/17/2022

Picture
It’s a busy week on the road with legislative fundraisers, the CU Professionals Forum, and finalizing details for the fall Hike the Hill event which is less than one month away!
Good Morning! I hope everyone is enjoying their last few days of summer before sending the kids back to school and we run out of warm weather! I’m spending this week on the road. Both the South Dakota House GOP and Senator Hoeven held their annual fundraising golf scrambles on Monday in Mitchell, SD and Fargo, ND, providing DakCU staff and members from each state the opportunities to rub shoulders with state legislators and Senator Hoeven himself. And, today, the Dakota Credit Union Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Golf Scramble fundraiser at Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo, in conjunction with our Dakota Credit Union Professional Forum and Large Credit Union CEO Roundtable that took place yesterday.

Hike the Hill Legislative Issues
Our annual fall Hike the Hill is less than one month away! Unfortunately if you aren’t already registered to attend, it is a little too late to join us – however, we are asking all members to reach out to us with any regulatory or legislative issues you would like our group to bring up during our regulator or Capitol Hill meetings on your behalf.

We have in-person meetings planned in Washington, DC with all three NCUA board members, CFPB Director Chopra, and our entire North and South Dakota congressional delegation. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to make your voice heard!

Three national legislative issues that we continue to discuss revolve around Interchange, inflation, and ESG scoring. However, there are a number of other legislative issues we plan to raise during our congressional meetings, a few of which are listed below:

  • Relax field of membership restrictions – Support HR 7003
  • Lift arbitrary lending caps – Support HR 5189
  • Increase loan maturity limits – Support S 762
  • Enhance credit union board meeting flexibility – Support HR 6889 / S 4325
  • Preserving payments and access to credit – Oppose S 4674
  • Keep Overdraft Protection – Oppose HR 4277
  • Reform the CFPB leadership structure – Support HR 4773

Be assured, we do want to hear from you, so please reach out to Amy Kleinschmit or me with any additional issues you would like us to raise for discussion while we are in DC. You can contact me at jkruse@dakcu.org and Amy can be reached at akleinschmit@dakcu.org.
