by Chesney Garnos, Director of Political & Grassroots Affairs It’s Game Time - Session Starts TODAY! It's Tuesday January 9th, the beginning of South Dakota’s 99th Legislative Session. Throughout this year’s session, the Dakota Credit Union Association will be there, serving as a strong voice for our South Dakota Credit Unions. Tip off will happen at 1:00 p.m. (CT) today with the State of the State Address. If you’re interested in watching the play by play, you can tune in on http://SD.net or http://Facebook.com/GovNoem. With the start of every new session comes the introduction of bills. As of last night (10:00 p.m.) 136 bills had been introduced so far. While we're obviously in the early stages of the session and haven't encountered many financial services or credit union related bills yet, we're eagerly anticipating their arrival. If you're interested in staying informed about the issues under consideration, you can keep track of them here. Your engagement is valued! Get Involved – Sponsor our South Dakota Credit Union Day at the Capitol With the session now underway, that means we are only a few weeks away from our big game day – South Dakota Credit Union Legislative Day. If your credit union is interested in being a sponsor for this event, please message me directly! A special THANK YOU to Oahe FCU, Black Hills FCU, Alloya Corporate FCU, and CU Mortgage for joining us as sponsors. We’re looking forward to a day full of advocacy thanks to each of your efforts! The schedule:
South Dakota Legislative Preview & Sit Down with Representative Dusty Johnson Last week, our South Dakota Government Affairs Committee (SD GAC) members and I had the opportunity to attend the annual Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Good Morning Sioux Falls Legislative Preview. This event allows community leaders to gain insight on what’s ahead for the legislative session. Several prominent themes emerged from legislators representing the Sioux Falls area, including education related bills, addressing childcare challenges, and infrastructure related bills. When it comes to the financial services industry, we will be watching for a Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) bill this session. Additionally last week, I had the privilege of participating in a Q&A session with Representative Dusty Johnson, hosted by the Young Professionals Network at the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 30 young professionals attended this event, providing a valuable opportunity for relationship building with various leaders from our Sioux Falls community. Where are my Jelly Roll Fans?
In D.C., Congress is in full swing this week with important hearings, including one featuring the renowned singer and songwriter Jelly Roll as a witness for the Senate Banking Committee. I’m not sure about you, but I’m hoping to see a photo of Jelly Roll alongside U.S. Senator Mike Rounds, who serves on the Senate Banking Committee! Here are the hearings our DakCU team is closely monitoring this week:
Last but certainly not least, I wanted to provide some important resources/links for you.
As always, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] with any legislative or advocacy questions. Comments are closed.
