Five Simple Tips for Better Banner Ads!

Does your credit union utilize banner ads, either on your own website or to drive traffic TO your website? There are some simple, yet effective, tips that you can implement to help boost your ROI and increase brand awareness.

First, what is your goal or purpose? Why are you creating a banner ad in the first place? It is to highlight a new product or service? Or perhaps it is to promote an upcoming community event or raise awareness for a special cause that your credit union is involved with.

Then:

1. Choose an effective ad size. According to Google Adsense, the most successful ad sizes are a medium rectangle, large rectangle, leaderboard, or half page followed next by a large mobile banner.
2. Design the banner so that it pops from its surroundings. This can be implemented, for example, by choosing bold, eye-catching colors or contrasting with a white or black border.
3. Maintain hierarchy within your design. You will want to make sure your design includes your credit union logo, the value proposition (your goal/purpose of creating the ad), and a call to action. All while maintaining a clear focal point.
4. Make sure your text is readable – from both a quick time perspective as well as distance. It needs to pop! So, keep it concise. All copy should be less than four lines!
5. If you are using photography or stock photos, make sure you are using high quality imagery. You will also want to ensure you are saving your banner ad as a small file size in the correct format.

Lastly, do your best to maximize your budget for proper audience targeting, or retargeting, and choose the appropriate date(s) and time(s) to display your ads.

While these five straightforward tips are likely to help your credit union create a more effective banner ad campaign, there is always much more that can be done - including a/b testing and experimenting to come up with the best formula for YOUR credit union.
