The Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Chairman's Challenge scheduled for March 3 – 7 in Washington, D.C., represents a premier opportunity for advocacy and camaraderie among the states in support of the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC).
This esteemed competition enables participants to contribute crucial advocacy funds either in person or virtually. Anticipation is building around the participation of SD CULAC Chair, Chad Moller, and ND CULAC Chair, Paul Brucker, both of whom are highly motivated to secure a victory in this prestigious event. The outcome of this year's challenge is eagerly awaited by many within the industry! Amid the competitive spirit of the Chairman's Challenge lies a deeper purpose: to address the ongoing threat of taxation and to articulate the unique value proposition of not-for-profit credit unions as distinct from other financial institutions. Your association is deeply committed to this cause, engaging both members and elected officials in grassroots advocacy. This is achieved through the strategic allocation of funds raised by two political action committees: the state-level Credit Union Political Action Committee (CUPAC) and the federal-level Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC). These entities have played a pivotal role in strengthening the political influence of the credit union movement over many years. CUPAC, both South Dakota and North Dakota, serves as the Dakota Credit Union Association’s state Political Action Committee. Meanwhile, CULAC functions as the national PAC, with contributions serving our federal delegation such as our South Dakota and North Dakota U.S. senators and representatives. Governance of both PACs is entrusted to a board of trustees comprised of esteemed credit union professionals and volunteers, ensuring that donations are judiciously used to support candidates who advocate for the credit union movement at both the state and federal levels. Our 2024 CULAC Chairs are Paul Brucker (ND) and Chad Moller (SD). The Chairman's Challenge not only underscores the unity and competitive fun within the credit union community, but also highlights the sector's unwavering dedication to advancing the credit union movement through effective advocacy and political engagement. If you would like to participate in this year’s CULAC Chairman’s Challenge, please reach out to Chesney Garnos or John Alexander to see if you and your credit union are eligible to participate! As a reminder, For those unable to attend GAC in-person this year, there is a virtual option available that will allow you to experience all mainstage keynote speakers as well as opening ceremonies and educational discussions. Open to current members of CUNA, NAFCU, and/or Dakota Credit Union Association. Register here. Comments are closed.
