Hashtags are a huge part of social media marketing, but sometimes we just forget to use them.  Make your content more discoverable and engage others!
by Shawn Marie Brummer, Communications & Media Specialist

Hashtags are a large part of social media marketing, but sometimes we just forget to use them.  That’s no big deal – unless you want to make your content more discoverable and engage other social media users with a common theme or interest.

Hashtags can increase awareness and shares, getting your content seen by more people than just followers.  Incorporating hashtags into your social media content can help grow your audience, but knowing HOW to use a hashtag is fundamental to your success.  Here are some “pro tips” from socialpilot.com.

  • Keep it simple and relevant.  Your hashtag should be short, simple to spell, and give your audience a clear idea about the topic.
  • Utilize trending hashtags.  If you have been following the #FridayFunny memes that DakCU uses to promote credit unions, you will see that they are often tied into a national day, week, or other trending event.
  • Use the same hashtag on multiple channels.  This article is about Facebook, but you can use the same hashtags on Twitter and Instagram.
  • Search the hashtag before using it.  Just make certain your hashtag isn’t being used for something you wouldn’t want your credit union associated with.
  • Don’t use too many.  It is suggested by many experts to use a maximum of two hashtags per post.

Just for fun, I Googled “best credit union hashtags” and was surprised what was on the list, and what was missing.
          #creditunion - 43%
          #creditunions - 11%
          #credituniondifference or #cudifference - 7%
          #creditunionlife - 6%
          #peoplehelpingpeople - 5%

NOT on the list:  #yourmoneyfurther or #openyoureyes.  But maybe we can change that?

Below are a few credit union posts that are making good use of hashtags.
