America's Credit Unions is advancing fraud prevention efforts, advocating for a fully staffed NCUA Board, protecting the credit union tax status, and continuing work on key federal legislative priorities.
From the Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU) and America's Credit Unions

Your Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU) continues working in close coordination with America’s Credit Unions, league partners, and industry stakeholders to monitor federal activity and advocate on the issues that matter most to Dakota credit unions and the members they serve.

The advocacy landscape continues to move quickly in Washington, D.C., and across the states, with several significant developments creating both opportunities and areas requiring continued vigilance for credit unions.

Check Fraud Awareness Campaign Underway
August marks the launch of a nationwide check fraud awareness campaign developed by America's Credit Unions, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues, and America Saves.

As check fraud continues to rise across the financial services industry, the month-long campaign provides ready-to-use educational resources to help credit unions raise awareness among members. Weekly materials include newsletter content, social media graphics, videos, blogs, and other tools focused on recognizing and preventing common check fraud schemes.

Dakota credit unions are encouraged to participate by sharing the campaign resources with staff and members throughout the month!

Senate Continues Work on NCUA Board Nomination
While the U.S. House is in its August district work period, the Senate remains in session and is expected to continue consideration of John Crews' nomination to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board.

America's Credit Unions continues to advocate for Crews' confirmation, emphasizing the importance of restoring a fully functioning three-member board to provide regulatory stability and ensure the continued safety and soundness of the credit union system.

The association also recently addressed inaccurate reports suggesting the nomination had already been confirmed, reaffirming its commitment to providing timely and accurate updates for credit unions.

Protecting the Credit Union Tax Status
With Congress continuing discussions on federal budget legislation, America's Credit Unions remains actively engaged in protecting the credit union federal tax exemption.

They continue meeting with lawmakers to reinforce the economic value of the not-for-profit credit union model and its impact on local communities. Those advocacy efforts have successfully protected the credit union tax status through previous budget negotiations, including last year's nationwide campaign that generated more than 861,000 contacts with congressional offices. Preserving the tax status remains one of the highest advocacy priorities.

Digital Assets Legislation Continues to Evolve
The Senate is also expected to continue discussions surrounding the CLARITY Act, legislation establishing a regulatory framework for digital assets.

America's Credit Unions has worked closely with lawmakers to ensure credit unions have clear authority to participate in innovative digital asset services under the oversight of the NCUA. The organization continues advocating for parity between federal and state-chartered credit unions while ensuring consumers maintain access to trusted financial institutions as the digital asset marketplace evolves.

Sharing the Credit Union Story with Policymakers
America's Credit Unions is also expanding its national "Once Upon an American Dream" policymaker influence campaign by highlighting real stories from credit union members across the country.

The campaign's next phase focuses on demonstrating how credit unions strengthen communities by helping families purchase homes, build businesses, and achieve financial stability. Through authentic member stories, the campaign reinforces the value credit unions bring to local economies and helps policymakers better understand the importance of preserving the credit union model.
