By George McDonald, DakCU Interim President/CEO and America's Credit Unions As we head into the final stretch of the year, a lot is happening across our credit union community, both here in the Dakotas and at a national level – including the government shutdown. Before the holiday rush sets in, I wanted to touch base and share a few timely updates and opportunities with you. Government Shutdown Update The Senate has voted to pass a continuing resolution during a procedural vote last night, November 9. The resolution is designed to fund the federal government and end the shutdown. If passed by the House of Representatives the weeks long shutdown will come to an end. While uncertainty remains, one thing is clear credit unions continue to step up for members impacted by the shutdown. Across the country, 90 percent of credit unions are offering deferred payments on existing loans, 78 percent have launched new loan programs, 88 percent have modified current loans, and more than two-thirds are waiving fees or providing additional financial counseling and budget support. It’s a powerful reminder of what sets credit unions apart: our unwavering commitment to people helping people, especially in times of need. For more information and updates on the shutdown, please visit today’s Legislative Update from DakCU Director of Political Strategy and Engagement, Kenley Lamberty. Registration Opens Soon for The Roundtable We’re excited to announce that registration for The Roundtable, formerly the Mondak Roundtable, officially opens next Tuesday, November 18! This year’s event promises engaging discussions, valuable insights, and a great lineup of speakers including new President and CEO of America’s Credit Unions, Scott Simpson, along with Jeff Rendel, Rory Rowland, and others. Mark your calendar now for February 3-4 in Las Vegas and reserve your spot early before things get busy this holiday season. Apply for the Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Crasher Program A friendly reminder that the deadline to apply to be a GAC Crasher is coming up soon: December 1, so don’t wait. On behalf of The Cooperative Trust, selected Crashers receive free registration to America’s Credit Unions GAC in Washington, D.C., along with exclusive experiences hosted by Filene and The Cooperative Trust. If you, or someone on your team, would be a great candidate, now’s the time to finalize and submit your materials. DakCU is once again offering scholarships for our Dakota Crashers to help offset travel costs. The deadline to apply is December 1, so don’t wait. Apply today and take part in this incredible opportunity to grow, connect, and represent your credit union on the national stage. Celebrating Dakota Credit Union Leadership I also want to recognize a familiar name making national headlines. The Credit Union Times recently announced its 2025 Luminaries honorees, celebrating leaders and organizations driving positive change and innovation across the industry. Among the honorees is our very own Joann Bergrud, chief operations officer from North Star Community Credit Union, who was recognized in the C-Suite Executive Leadership category! We’ll be sharing more about this well-deserved recognition soon, but for now, please join me in congratulating Joann on this outstanding achievement. Office Closure Reminder Finally, a quick note that DakCU’s offices will be closed tomorrow, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day as we take time to honor those who have served our country. As always, thank you for your continued engagement and support. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the many opportunities ahead to learn, connect, and celebrate the incredible work being done across the Dakotas. If you have questions or there’s anything we can help with, please reach out to me or your association team. Comments are closed.
