It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through July, Dakota summer is flying by faster than a walleye on a hook. I hope you’re all taking time to enjoy everything this special season has to offer: long days at the lake, evenings at the county fair, concerts under the stars, lazy rivers, and fresh Black Hills air. Whether it’s a weekend camping trip, a backyard BBQ, or casting a line at sunrise, summer in the Dakotas has a rhythm and beauty that reminds us why we love calling this region home. While many are taking advantage of well-deserved summer breaks, our advocacy work continues at full speed as we transition into the post-reconciliation phase on Capitol Hill. What’s Next: Post-Reconciliation Advocacy Priorities With H.R. 1 now behind us and the credit union tax status preserved, we’re pivoting to the next phase of our federal strategy as we approach the August congressional recess. Here’s where our attention is focused: Grow Senate support for the Credit Union Board Modernization Act – We need to build momentum and ensure credit unions have the governance flexibility to meet today’s demands. Block harmful banking provisions in the NDAA – Each year, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) becomes a vehicle for unrelated amendments. We’re once again pushing back against proposals like the Durbin-Marshall Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA) and interest rate caps measures that would harm consumers, limit access, and hurt credit unions. Advance legislative solutions that empower credit unions – We’re working to move bills that enhance operational flexibility and modernize our regulatory framework. The future is bright but we need to stay united and vigilant. NDAA Watch: Defending Our Members As mentioned above, the NDAA has once again drawn attention as a potential landing spot for harmful amendments. These annual defense bills often attract unrelated provisions, and this year’s threats include:
We’re reinforcing our message to Congress: Credit unions should not be collateral damage in unrelated fights. Credit Union Support for Texas Credit Unions Local credit unions are stepping up in the wake of devastating flash floods. From distributing emergency supplies to launching relief funds, the movement is once again answering the call. The Cornerstone Foundation (Cornerstone is the League representing Texas Credit Unions) is offering grants to assist affected credit union employees and volunteers with urgent needs. It’s a powerful reminder that our industry’s true strength lies in its heart. Save the Date: #ILOVEMYCREDITUNION Day is July 25, 2025! On Friday, July 25, credit unions across the country, including right here in North Dakota and South Dakota, will unite for a single purpose: to flood social media with high-energy, authentic messages that celebrate the credit union difference. #ILOVEMYCREDITUNION Day is a grassroots social media blitz that brings our movement together to share what makes credit unions so special: people helping people, member ownership, financial empowerment, and community impact. It’s a chance to highlight the stories, values, and moments that remind us why we do what we do and why it matters. How to Participate: Whether you’re a small credit union, a large one, or somewhere in between, your voice is essential!
Here in the Dakotas, we’ve always taken pride in the cooperative spirit that binds our credit unions and our communities. Let’s lead by example and show the rest of the nation how North Dakota and South Dakota credit unions are making a difference one member, one town, one story at a time. A Moment of Gratitude and Action & Looking Ahead Your continued engagement fuels this momentum. From grassroots outreach to your everyday conversations with members, your voice is powerful. And it’s making a difference. Even as we celebrate recent wins, credit unions across the country continue to embody the people-helping-people philosophy in real and meaningful ways. We’ve achieved a lot together, and the future is bright for credit unions and the millions of Americans who rely on us. As we continue the push through summer, let’s carry this energy forward. Enjoy every moment of the Dakota summer, recharge when you can, and know that your dedication is shaping a stronger credit union movement. Stay safe, stay engaged, and keep making a difference, and wear sunscreen. DakCU President/CEO
