Hustle, Bustle, and a Year to Celebrate Greetings, friends! As the wind picks up and the temperatures drop (a brisk reminder we live in the Dakotas!), there’s no denying that winter is here in full force. If you’ve stepped outside lately, you’ve probably bundled up like Ralphie’s little brother in A Christmas Story. And as we brace ourselves for another stretch of chilly weather, it’s safe to say the holiday hustle and bustle is in full swing. Whether it’s last-minute shopping, family gatherings, or decking the halls, this season is as hectic as it is heartwarming. But as we pause between the parties and the piles of snow, let’s take a moment to reflect on the year that was—a year that brought both challenges and triumphs for credit unions across the Dakotas and beyond. Despite the uncertain economic environment, our credit unions stepped up to meet the needs of their members with resilience and creativity. Here in the Dakotas, the credit union movement continues to flourish, proving yet again the incredible impact of putting people over profits. Across the nation, credit unions saw increased membership, expanded services, and heightened advocacy efforts that secured big wins for members and communities. From helping first-time homebuyers get the keys to their dream homes to supporting small businesses, credit unions proved why we’re not just another financial institution—we’re a movement. And we’re stronger together. One highlight of the year for us was seeing our advocacy work take root, thanks to the unwavering support of credit union leaders, staff, and volunteers like you. In the Dakotas, our “Pints & Politics” events brought dozens of credit union professionals and policymakers together to connect on what really matters. These gatherings reinforced the credit union difference and set the stage for legislative wins in the coming year. On a national level, we’ve had a front-row seat to the power of unity. Efforts to protect credit unions from harmful legislation, like the Credit Card Competition Act, reminded lawmakers that credit unions are a vital lifeline for millions of Americans. Your voices, whether through emails, phone calls, or in-person meetings, made a difference. It’s been a year of growth, advocacy, and success, all driven by the people at the heart of our movement—people like you who work tirelessly to serve your members and communities. Whether you’re a board member, a CEO, or a frontline member service representative, each of you is essential to keeping the credit union spirit alive. So, as you sip that second (or third) cup of coffee to keep warm, remember to reflect on the year we’ve had. Celebrate the small wins, the big victories, and everything in between. And don’t forget to take time for yourself and your loved ones this season—you’ve earned it! Here’s to another successful year in 2025! Let’s keep building, growing, and working together to ensure credit unions remain the financial champions our members deserve. Congratulations to Levo! Last week, Levo Credit Union (Sioux Falls, SD) announced they will be opening a new branch in Sioux City, Iowa, after federal approval was received to acquire a bank branch in that city. With this newest expansion, Levo will be able to serve more people and the entire community with their continued support to many charitable causes, as demonstrated by their nearly $100K in donations last year alone by the Levo Foundation! Congratulations to Fran Sommerfeld and the entire crew on their continued success! Mari Gagelin retirement open house. The South Dakota Central Chapter of Credit Unions continues their tradition of giving back to the community – especially during the holiday season. Last week, the chapter teamed up to donate a generous number of items to Helping Hands in Huron, an organization that provides food and personal care items, as well as clothing, furniture, and Christmas gifts to those in need. Well done! Have a great week, DakCU President/CEO
