The President's Perspective

Remembering the visionary credit union pioneers who established a national association at Estes Park 90 years ago! Plus, an economic update, and embracing innovation!

The backbone of the Credit Union Movement turns 90 years old.
Just a little over a month ago, (June 26) we recognized and celebrated the 90th anniversary of FDR’s signing of the Federal Credit Union Act. This past Saturday also marked a significant milestone in the credit union movement. August 10th marks the date when visionary credit union pioneers from across the country made the trek to Estes Park, CO, in 1934 and officially established the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) for the sole purpose to represent and support credit unions across the United States. Its creation was a significant step in uniting the movement under a single organization, providing advocacy, education, and resources to help credit unions better serve their members. This formation also helped to standardize practices and promote the growth of credit unions nationwide.

One of those early credit union supporters in Estes Park on that special day was Edward Filene, who said, “Progress is the constant replacing of the best there is with something still better.”   The legacy of our roots is forever enshrined in the history of the credit union movement, and today we continue to carry with us the sacrifices, challenges and triumphs those early visionary leaders experienced. We are just a little over eight months into a new chapter with a unified America’s Credit Unions national association. Together, we will apply the lessons we have learned to build something new—something still better. The future of our movement is brighter because we all are committed to advancing our members and the communities we serve.

Foundation Golf Scramble kicks off this morning!
Today, a full slate of 72 golfers will be teeing off at the Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo for the 8th annual Foundation Golf Scramble. Once again this year, 100 percent of the proceeds from this event will go to Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo for the new Credit Unions for Kids Micropreemie Unit, which is expected to begin construction later this year. The Foundation Board works hard to put this event together, and to manage the event, and we are sincerely grateful for their volunteer spirit. We could not accomplish these wonderful things without their support, and the support of our sponsors, players, and credit unions from across both states. Thank you all for helping to make this another successful event!

Economic Update with Mike Schenk.
America’s Credit Unions Chief Economist Mike Schenk recently provided an overview of the newly minted Economic and Credit Union Forecast in his latest Economic Update video. The forecast group consists of eight current and former credit union industry economists. Early in July, the group met to discuss the economy, its trajectory, and the implications for credit unions. Schenk says the Federal Reserve will deliver on its promise of a “soft landing.” You can watch the full video here.

On a positive note!
Time to “toot our own horns” a bit! Today, I would like to send a “shout out” to Town & Country Credit Union. Their Fargo crew helped furnish backpacks loaded with school supplies for local students as part of the organized United Way of Cass-Clay counties United Way efforts, ensuring that students in need can head back to school with the items they need to have a successful school year. Well done!

Have a great week,
