The President's Perspective

4/8/2025

Protect our tax-exempt status. Plus, 2025 Summit early bird deadline, leadership news from Avanti FCU, and a Credit Union for Kids celebration.
As we continue our mission to champion credit unions across the Dakotas, this week’s message is a mix of critical advocacy, impactful leadership transitions, upcoming events, and ongoing celebrations that highlight the true cooperative spirit of our movement.

Urgent Call to Action: Help Us Protect Our Tax-Exempt Status
Dakota credit union CEOs and leaders—we need your voice now. The Dakota Credit Union Association, representing all of the credit unions and nearly 2,400 employees serving over 557,000 members across North and South Dakota, is sounding the alarm on renewed tax reform efforts in Washington, D.C.

In recent weeks, proposals have surfaced that could threaten our federal tax exemption—a core component of what enables credit unions to return value to members through lower loan rates, higher savings dividends, and reduced fees. During our Hill visits this March, we appreciated the opportunity to share how our unique, not-for-profit structure benefits communities throughout the Dakotas. But we must reinforce that any attempt to remove our tax exemption is not just a tax on credit unions—it’s a tax on our members.

With more than 55 affiliated CEOs leading both state and federally chartered credit unions in the Dakotas, your collective voice carries immense weight. We are preparing a sign-on letter to our congressional delegation urging them to stand strong in support of credit unions. Please join us in signing this critical letter. Your participation is vital to protecting our members and preserving our cooperative model.

More information and instructions on how to sign the letter will be included in the Memo on Thursday.

April is Youth Month and Financial Literacy Month
Throughout April, we celebrate #CUYouthMonth and National Financial Literacy Month, emphasizing our year-round commitment to the financial well-being of our members. These observances give us even more opportunities to engage with youth, families, and schools to showcase the credit union difference. Make sure your credit union is taking full advantage of the many free resources and activity ideas available. Let’s build brighter financial futures—starting young! You can get those resources here.

Early Bird Deadline Approaching for the 2025 Summit!
Time is running out to lock in your discounted registration for the 2025 Dakota Credit Union Summit, happening May 12–14 at the Delta Hotel in Fargo! With a dynamic lineup of speakers covering economic trends, volunteer training, marketing, and leadership development, plus networking opportunities like our golf outing, awards banquet, and business meeting—you don’t want to miss it. Register by April 18 to save $50 per person.

Stack the PAC: Kick Off Summit Week with Advocacy and Appreciation
We're kicking off Summit week with a combined GAC recognition and fundraising event on Monday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Delta Hotel. If you supported our advocacy efforts through payroll deduction, direct contributions, or entered our CU Advocate sweepstakes ($24/year), you’re invited!

Not on the list? No problem—simply donate $24 at the door and join us for this fun and meaningful evening. Let’s celebrate what we’ve accomplished together and gear up for what’s ahead.

Leadership News from Avanti FCU
A warm congratulations to Austin Petrick, the newly appointed CEO of Avanti Federal Credit Union in Watertown, SD. Austin steps into the role following the retirement of Judy Wolff, who served with dedication and integrity. Please join us in welcoming Austin and thanking Judy for her years of outstanding leadership. We look forward to Avanti’s continued success under Austin’s guidance.

Credit Union for Kids Ribbon Cutting at Sanford Health
Sanford Health will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Credit Union for Kids Micropreemie Unit on Thursday, May 15. The celebration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a social, followed by a 9:00 a.m. program. If you are a contributing credit union, watch your inbox and mailbox for your invitation—this is a moment of pride for the entire credit union community as we witness the impact of our collective charitable efforts.

As always, thank you for your commitment to the credit union movement. Let’s continue to stand united, protect our future, and celebrate all the good we do—together.

In cooperative spirit,
