The credit union community in western South Dakota is celebrating a fresh beginning with the formal launch of the Trailblazers of the West Chapter. The newly reorganized chapter held its first gathering on Wednesday, January 21, marking an energizing start to a new era of collaboration, connection, and professional engagement. This revitalization effort grew out of the Black Hills Federal Credit Union’s Emerging Leader program, now in its second year. As part of their annual project, participants were challenged to develop an initiative that would create meaningful impact for credit unions, members, and the broader community. Through that process, the group recognized a longstanding gap: there was no consistent, collaborative space for credit unions across the western region to connect. Their research revealed that the former Old West Chapter had dissolved years ago due to limited participation and a heavy compliance-focused structure. With that history in mind, the Emerging Leader team set out to reimagine what a modern, engaging chapter could look like one centered on connection, learning, and the “people helping people” philosophy that defines the credit union movement. Acting as the advisory board for the new chapter, they met personally with CEOs from area credit unions to gather feedback, understand local needs, and ensure strong support for reestablishing a regional chapter. The enthusiastic response culminated in the first Trailblazers of the West gathering, where more than 90 credit union professionals and supporters came together an encouraging sign of renewed interest and momentum.
“The Trailblazers of the West Credit Union Social was a powerful reminder of the energy, collaboration, and shared purpose that make the credit union movement so strong,” said Cassie Pannone, CFO at Northern Hills Federal Credit Union and Chapter Board Treasurer. “Events like this truly highlight the passion and commitment credit union professionals bring to serving members and strengthening our communities.” That enthusiasm was echoed by chapter leadership. “The response to our first Trailblazers of the West event affirmed what we believed all along—there is a strong desire for connection and collaboration among credit unions in the Black Hills,” said Heidi Bulman, Project Manager at Black Hills Federal Credit Union and Advisory Board Member. “We are thrilled about the future of the chapter and the opportunities ahead to learn, engage, and build lasting partnerships.” Credit union professionals across the region are encouraged to stay engaged as the chapter continues to build out its schedule of activities.
