Credit unions around the world will come together Thursday, October 15, to celebrate the 78th International Credit Union (ICU) Day, an annual opportunity to recognize the history, achievements and enduring impact of the global credit union movement.
This year’s theme, “Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World,” highlights the role credit unions and financial cooperatives play in providing stability, trust and a member-focused alternative in an increasingly complex financial landscape. Since 1948, ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October, giving credit unions around the world an opportunity to showcase the difference they make for their members and communities. From financial education and community giving to membership drives, volunteer efforts and local celebrations, credit unions mark the day in ways that reflect the people-helping-people philosophy at the heart of the movement. ICU Day also provides an opportunity to recognize the continued importance of financial inclusion. An estimated 1.3 billion people around the world remain unbanked, underscoring the need for financial institutions that can reach underserved communities and provide people with access to responsible, cooperative financial services. For credit unions, the day is about more than celebrating an anniversary. It is a chance to tell the credit union story, engage members and communities, and remind people of what makes the cooperative model different. Credit unions across the globe will celebrate October 15 through fundraisers, contests, open houses, volunteer activities and other events, while sharing their stories and celebrations on social media using #ICUDay2026.
