With financial fraud losses in the U.S. totaling at least $16 billion in 2025, credit unions continue to play a critical role in protecting members and educating consumers about emerging fraud risks.

Throughout August, America's Credit Unions in partnership with the American Association of Credit Union Leagues, TruStage, and America Saves has launched a nationwide awareness campaign focused on one of the fastest-growing forms of financial crime: check fraud.

While many financial transactions now occur digitally, millions of consumers and businesses still rely on paper checks to pay bills, make purchases, and send payments. Criminals continue to exploit these transactions through a variety of increasingly sophisticated schemes, making consumer education more important than ever.

The month-long campaign will provide credit unions with weekly educational resources to help raise awareness of check fraud and prevention strategies. Materials include newsletter content, social media graphics, videos, blog posts, and other ready-to-use resources that can be shared with members.

The four week campaign focuses on the different types of check fraud, how these scams occur, and the warning signs consumers should know. Resources also explore how to detect fraud, steps to protect personal finances, and what to do if someone becomes a victim of check fraud.

Your Dakota Credit Union Association encourages affiliated credit unions to participate in the campaign by utilizing the available resources to educate members and reinforce fraud prevention efforts throughout the month.

Access the campaign's social media toolkit and educational resources to begin sharing with your members today.
