By John Alexander, DakCU Director of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs DakCU Compliance Conclave The Dakota Credit Union Association hosted its inaugural Compliance Conclave at the Radisson Hotel, launching what is set to become a recurring series of essential educational events for credit union professionals. The two-day event drew 19 attendees representing 12 unique credit unions, exceeding expectations as compliance officers, executives, and staff came together for in-depth insights and practical, hands-on learning. Leading the event was ViClarity’s own Crystal Streeper, who taught the dynamic session to include a “Hands-On: Drafting Cybersecurity & AML Policies.” Guiding participants through the practical challenges of crafting effective cybersecurity protocols and anti-money laundering procedures, turning regulatory expectations into actionable policy. The discussions were broad, delving into topics like cybersecurity vulnerabilities, CTR and SAR reporting, third-party risk management, and Regulation E. Every question, case study, and example was drawn from real issues submitted by DakCU members themselves, ensuring the material was not just theoretical but immediately applicable. A Day with the Commissioner It was one of those mornings that starts before the sun’s fully up and doesn’t slow down for a second. Bright and early Wednesday, I met with the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to discuss agriculture-related lending issues that hit close to home for credit unions serving North Dakota’s farming communities. The conversation was productive but intense, the kind that leaves your brain spinning and your coffee cup empty. By the time I wrapped up, I was racing across town to the Gateway to Science Museum for “A Day with the Commissioner.” Walking through the doors, I was greeted by a friendly entourage guiding guests upstairs, and right there were two familiar faces I was thrilled to see again Commissioner Kruse and Assistant Commissioner Krebs. Smiles all around, a few laughs, and an immediate sense of ease set the tone for the morning. After a quick reassurance that yes, there was coffee (a small miracle at least to me), conversation flowed easily, and the event sped off. Beyond the casual exchanges and caffeine-fueled chatter, the day was a reminder of why these events matter. “A Day with the Commissioner” wasn’t about pomp or formalities; it was about connection credit unions and regulators coming together in a space where open dialogue thrives. Conversations about compliance, agricultural lending, and financial resilience weren’t just theoretical, they were rooted in the realities of top notch speakers. I left with a smile and a Crumble cookie, so I’d say that’s a win. Stay Connected For more information or to share your perspectives, feel free to contact me. Comments are closed.
