Dakota Credit Union Association Meets with Governor Rhoden and Lt. Governor Venhuizen
Last week, representatives from the Dakota Credit Union Association met with Governor Larry Rhoden and Lt. Governor Tony Venhuizen to discuss key issues affecting South Dakota credit unions and the members they serve.

A primary focus of the meeting was the importance of interchange, or swipe, fees. These fees play a vital role in helping credit unions invest in fraud prevention, provide cardholder protections, and offer rewards programs and other valuable member benefits. Interchange also delivers significant value to retailers by providing guaranteed payment and secure transaction processing, creating a safer and more efficient payment system for businesses and consumers alike.

The discussion also included ongoing efforts to combat fraud and protect South Dakotans from financial exploitation. We expressed our appreciation to Governor Rhoden for signing two important pieces of legislation during the 2025 session:
  • SB 98, which establishes protections related to cryptocurrency kiosks and helps combat scams targeting consumers.
  • HB 1238, which creates trusted contact account provisions to better protect elderly and vulnerable individuals from financial exploitation.

Both laws took effect on July 1 and represent meaningful steps toward strengthening consumer protection across South Dakota.

We appreciate Governor Rhoden and Lt. Governor Venhuizen taking the time to meet with us and discuss these important issues. Strong partnerships with state leaders help ensure credit unions can continue serving members while promoting financial security and consumer protection throughout our communities.
