By Kenley Lamberty, DakCU Director of Political Strategy and Engagement Dakota Credit Union Association Leaders Take Priorities to Capitol Hill Dakota credit union leaders recently completed a successful Hike the Hill visit to Washington, D.C., where they met with federal offices to share the issues most affecting members and communities back home. Discussions centered on the credit union difference, housing affordability, and fraud prevention. SD Credit Union Advocates Meet with Dusty Johnson We are grateful to the offices of Majority Leader John Thune, Senator Mike Rounds, and Representative Dusty Johnson for taking the time to meet with our South Dakota delegation. These conversations gave our members the opportunity to thank our federal representatives for their ongoing work on behalf of the state and to reinforce the critical role credit unions play in supporting local families and businesses. The engagement and openness from each office made this year’s visit especially productive. Stay tuned for John Alexander's North Dakota recap in this Thursday's Memo. Post‑Session Tour to Highlight 101st Legislative Session Outcomes As the 101st Legislative Session wraps up, your Association is offering post‑session presentations to any credit union interested in a tailored briefing on this year’s activity at the statehouse. We’ll cover key legislative outcomes, emerging issues to watch, and the policy trends shaping the operating environment for South Dakota credit unions. If your credit union would like a customized rundown for your leadership team or staff, please reach out. I’d be glad to join you and walk through what we saw at the Capitol and what it means for your members. Credit Unions Back Road to Housing Bill as Debate Continues The ROAD to Housing Act advanced this week with provisions that Dakota credit unions strongly support, including the addition of the Afford Act. This component aims to improve housing affordability and expand access—priorities that align closely with the needs of members and communities across the Dakotas. Its inclusion represents a meaningful step toward addressing supply and access challenges throughout the region. The bill also received an amendment adding the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA), which credit unions continue to oppose due to concerns about payment security and increased fraud exposure. At this point, we believe the amendment is unlikely to remain in the package due to a lack of votes. Despite the addition, your association remains supportive of the core Road to Housing framework and is monitoring the package closely as negotiations continue. We will continue tracking developments and keep members informed as the legislation evolves. Stay Connected For more information or to share your perspectives, feel free to contact me.
