Supreme Court Expands Presidential Authority Over Federal Agencies
The U.S. Supreme Court issued a major decision Monday expanding presidential authority over independent federal agencies, ruling that the president can remove most agency leaders at will and overturning a decades-old precedent that had provided those officials with for-cause protections. The Court did preserve an important exception for the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors, maintaining its independence due to its role in monetary policy. For credit unions, this shift could lead to more rapid changes in regulatory and supervisory priorities as administrations change, with agencies more closely aligned to the White House. While no immediate regulatory changes occur, the decision introduces a higher degree of uncertainty and potential volatility in the oversight landscape going forward.

Treasury Releases Long-Delayed CDFI Funds Ahead of Sept. 30 Deadline
The U.S. Treasury Department has opened applications for long-delayed Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund dollars, giving lenders a narrow window to compete for funding that will expire September 30. The opportunity includes $49 million available through the Bank Enterprise Award (BEA) and Small Dollar Loan (SDL) programs, with application deadlines of July 31 and July 30, respectively. Treasury is also offering $500 million in bond guarantee authority to support long-term, below-market financing for eligible institutions.

The Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU) is pleased to see these funds finally made available, as they will provide meaningful opportunities for credit unions to expand access to affordable financial services. With demand for community-based lending continuing to grow, DakCU believes this funding will play an important role in helping credit unions better serve underserved and rural communities across the region.

Fall Hike the Hill (Congressional Caucus) Now Open
Registration is now live for this year’s Fall Hike the Hill, held in conjunction with the America’s Credit Unions Congressional Caucus, September 13-16, 2026.

This is one of the most impactful advocacy opportunities of the year, providing a chance to engage directly with federal lawmakers on the issues that matter most to credit unions and our members.

Scholarship assistance may be available through DakCU’s Roger Heacock HTH Scholarship Program. Assistance varies each year and is based on the number of qualified applicants and funds available. Members interested in applying for financial assistance should complete the Roger Heacock Scholarship Application and return to me.

We also have a room block reserved at the Hampton Inn & Suites Washington DC Navy Yard. You must book your room(s) before August 15, 2026.

South Dakota voters, don’t miss your opportunity to make your voice heard in the upcoming gubernatorial runoff election on July 28. There are only a few days remaining to register to vote and be eligible to participate, so it’s important to act quickly if you haven’t already. Early voting is also available, allowing you to cast your ballot ahead of Election Day. Check with your local county auditor for early voting locations, dates, and hours. If you’re already registered, take a moment to confirm your status and make a plan to vote.
