by John Alexander, Director of Legislative & Regulatory Affairs Time-traveling advocate strikes historic deal with Meta sunglasses; joins Trump in 2018 to pass S.2155. In a stunning twist of fate, I’ve done what science fiction could only dream of: traveled back in time – thanks to a slick pair of Meta sunglasses. For the low price of every ounce of my privacy and possibly my soul, Meta gifted me the power to hop through the space-time continuum. Naturally, my first stop? May 24, 2018. Why? Because nothing screams "heroic time traveler" like ensuring the passage of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act (S.2155). There I was, nestled right beside Trump, Senator Heidi Heitkamp, and Kevin Cramer, beaming with pride, knowing I was singlehandedly saving credit unions. Time travel, baby—you're welcome. If I can pull this off, just imagine what else I’ll do. Buckle up. Advocating for credit unions: a week of high-stakes meetings. Last Monday, we met with Mary Silverthorn from Senator Kevin Cramer’s office, and by Friday, we were deep in conversation with Julie Fedorchak, discussing similar key issues affecting our credit union members. Jeff Olson, our GAC Chair Steve Davis, along with Chesney Garnos and I, all sat down with Julie to outline our concerns, focusing on the overreach of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the legislative risks credit unions face. In each meeting, the message was clear: protecting credit unions' ability to serve their communities must remain a top priority. From the complexities of tribal financial services to the ongoing fight against harmful regulations, our advocacy efforts are in full swing!
Next week, we will be in Washington, DC to meet with our regulators and our elected representatives! Stay tuned to the Memo for an update from our fall Hike the Hill! As always, don’t hesitate to contact me with any legislative or regulatory concerns. Comments are closed.
