DakCU’s Fierce Legislative Presence at the Capitol
The halls of the North Dakota Capitol have been buzzing with political maneuvering, high-stakes negotiations, and, of course, a few eyebrow-raising moments that only the legislative session can deliver. But amid the whirlwind, one thing is certain: the Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU) is not sitting on the sidelines. With Governor Kelly Armstrong’s State of the State address kicking off the session and lawmakers diving headfirst into the 69th Legislative Assembly, the energy in Bismarck is palpable. While DakCU isn’t bringing forward a specific bill this session, that doesn’t mean we’re taking a backseat. Far from it. Our presence is felt in every critical discussion, and our advocacy is stronger than ever. Six Bills, Four on Deck—And More to Come So far, we’ve testified or submitted written testimony on six bills and are actively monitoring four more. These legislative proposals touch on everything from financial regulations to consumer protection—issues that strike at the very heart of what credit unions stand for. And trust us, we’ve seen it all this session—some bills that make perfect sense, others that leave us scratching our heads, and a few that are downright absurd. But through it all, DakCU remains laser-focused on ensuring that credit unions and their members are protected from harmful regulations, unnecessary restrictions, and the kind of legislative overreach that could stifle growth and innovation in our industry. Presence Matters: DakCU is Front and Center Staying engaged in the legislative process isn’t just about pushing bills forward; it’s about making sure lawmakers understand the role credit unions play in our communities. Whether it’s in committee hearings, one-on-one meetings with legislators, or just having a strong presence in the Capitol, we’re ensuring that credit unions remain top of mind for decision-makers. The truth is, some legislators still need a reminder about what makes credit unions different from banks and why member-owned financial institutions are vital to the financial well-being of North Dakotans. That’s why our advocacy doesn’t stop when the testimony ends—we keep the conversations going, ensuring that credit union members have a voice in every major legislative decision. What’s Next? Eyes on the Big Picture With nearly two weeks down and a long road ahead, we’re expecting more twists, more debates, and plenty of unexpected moments—because, let’s face it, the legislative process is never predictable. We’ll continue monitoring bills, shaping the conversation, and ensuring that credit unions stay protected from policies that could do more harm than good. And if history has taught us anything, it’s that the real battles often happen behind the scenes. That’s why DakCU will be in the trenches, advocating relentlessly and making sure that when lawmakers make decisions about North Dakota’s financial future, credit unions are always part of the equation. So, stay tuned. The session is just getting started, and we’re just getting warmed up. Stay Connected For more information or to share your perspectives, feel free to contact me. Comments are closed.
