As fraud schemes continue to evolve and increasingly target older adults, Dakota credit unions play a critical role in protecting members and their financial well-being. Recognizing this growing need, the Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU) is encouraging credit unions across the Dakotas to take advantage of a new resource developed through the League System in partnership with the American Association of Credit Union Leagues.
The Elder Exploitation Prevention Toolkit is a fully customizable, ready-to-use resource designed to help credit unions strengthen their efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to elder financial abuse. This comprehensive toolkit is built with flexibility in mind, making it easy for credit unions of all sizes to integrate into their existing communications, staff training, and community outreach efforts. Whether you are looking to enhance frontline awareness, provide timely education to members, or expand your community engagement, these materials are designed to support your work. The toolkit includes a range of practical resources, including educational content to help members recognize and avoid scams, social media and outreach materials to extend awareness into your communities, and staff-focused guides, checklists, and conversation starters to support your teams in real-time interactions. Together, these tools help ensure credit union staff are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to respond when it matters most. With June recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, now is an ideal time to begin incorporating these materials into your outreach. DakCU encourages credit unions to carry these efforts forward year-round to strengthen member protection and education. Supporting members at every stage of life is central to the credit union mission. By utilizing tools like the Elder Exploitation Prevention Toolkit, Dakota credit unions can continue to lead with purpose, helping safeguard the financial futures of the communities they serve.
