BHFCU Supports Local Schools

This credit union donated nearly $44,000 to schools and educational organizations to help make the school year successful.
With the help of nominations from community members, Black Hills Federal Credit Union (BHFCU) made a significant impact by donating $43,750 to a combination of 29 classrooms, schools, and educational organizations.
BHFCU’s School Support Drive provides schools and organizations with funds to help make the school year more successful. This year, the annual effort continued evolving by calling on community members to nominate schools and organizations in need. Over 120 nominations detailed needs spanning playground equipment, meal and travel vouchers, mechanics programs, and more.

“This year’s new format put power in the hands of our communities,” emphasized Heidi Bulman, Senior Community Development Officer. “Their nominations were instrumental in identifying the unique needs of schools and organizations, enabling us to provide the necessary support to turn those dreams into a reality.”

BHFCU spread the love to 25 schools and organizations with donations ranging from $500 - $5,000 depending on the need. Additionally, the credit union wanted to provide support at the classroom level this year. A call for teacher wish lists led to four lucky classrooms receiving $500 worth of goodies they were after.

“There’s nothing like walking into a classroom of fifth graders full of pure excitement,” shared Bulman. “Connecting with teachers and students on a classroom level is an exciting new initiative we look forward to growing.”

The credit union didn’t want to leave their previous partner businesses behind either. They worked to pair businesses with educational organizations with supply needs. The matching program allowed the businesses to continue the fun of collecting supplies and the joy of helping local students.

BHFCU relies on donations from members, the community, and area businesses across the state. And staff gets in on the fun, too. They help raise funds through an online auction, with many items donated by area businesses.
Donations to the Drive are made through the Black Hills FCU Charitable Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Established in Rapid City in 1941, Black Hills Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative serving more than 110,000 members. The community-chartered credit union has 18 locations in South Dakota and two in Montana. For more information, visit bhfcu.com.
