Black Hills Federal Credit Union (BHFCU) recently donated nearly 1,600 kids’ books and $700 to the Readiatrics Book Drive. BHFCU has participated in the Readiatrics Book Drive for over a decade. This annual drive collects children’s books for Western South Dakota kids experiencing a crisis with their family, health, or home situation. Many of the gathered books are donated to the South Dakota Department of Health for distribution throughout the region.
“We feel a direct tie to the drive’s mission of getting literacy into the homes of our region’s youth,” said Laura Martinmaas, BHFCU Member Service Center Manager. “At BHFCU, our mission is to improve the lives of our members and those in our community. And isn’t giving a book to a child in need a perfect example of that?” Each year, BHFCU’s ten West River locations come together to collect new and gently used children’s books to donate to the drive. Staff also raises funds through our Jeans Day program and personal donations. Monetary contributions are used by the drive to purchase additional books. BHFCU supports community needs through corporate contributions, employee fundraisers and Jeans Day donations, and contributions from members, staff, and community supporters to the Black Hills FCU Charitable Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
